Description
Crisp onions transform into feathery chips as sparkling water in the batter sparks tiny bubbles, creating a light, golden crunch that crackles with flavor.
Ingredients
- 2 large onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 cup cold sparkling water
- 2 cups vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- Peel the onions and slice them into very thin rings, then separate the rings gently.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
- Add the cold sparkling water to the dry ingredients and stir until a smooth, slightly thick batter forms.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Dip a handful of onion rings into the batter, ensuring each ring is fully coated, then carefully place them into the hot oil.
- Fry the onion rings in batches for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the rings with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Allow the onion ring chips to cool briefly so they crisp up further before serving.
Notes
- For extra crunch, double-dip the rings by coating them again in the batter before frying.
- Ensure the oil stays at a consistent temperature to prevent soggy chips.
- Serve immediately for the best texture; the chips can lose crispness if left standing too long.
- Customize seasoning by adding cayenne pepper for heat or herbs like thyme for extra flavor.
